The pick of the week was a no brainer. Although there were once again a lot of quality sites, the huge collection of Comic Book Covers is by far our favorite. Its also apropriate because Comic-Con is happening this week. Congrats to Comic Covers!

We’re starting off this week with something I know very little about: makeup. Actually, the fine art of Beauty in general. I’m a beast of a man. And if I ever have to pick up eyeliner for my wife I’ll later be found pacing an infinite circle of confusion in the cosmetics aisle. But that’s me. Chovy! His blog takes on the more technical side of websites but adds just enough of the marketing ingredient to give it flavor. He’s even starting up his own Free Links Friday. Pretty cool!

Webhosts are everywhere these days. And if you are in need of one its easy to get caught in the arms race of who has more megs/bandwidth/databases/aliases/etc. That’s why Dave tells us to just Stop And Host. They offer affordable and competitive plans, have top of the line servers, and are housed in a safe and popular DC in Dallas. No need to get caught up in the race, just Stop. Drop. And Host. (I know, I know, but I’m running low in the cliche department lately).

If you are new to blogging, the whole idea of finding a niche, writing content, learning a little SEO, networking with other bloggers, and maintaining readership can be more than overwhelming. Weblog 101 is here to help. They cover such basics of getting a blog off the ground (or improving an existing one).

Used Macs and iPods are everywhere these days. You can look on ebay or craigslist and be knee deep in all the extra clutter they have, or you can go to MacGhetto. With an inspiring clean and well done design, MacGhetto is the place to go when you don’t quite think your Apple is ready for the graveyard and would like to sell it.

There’s a fine collection of entrepreneurial stories and experiences to be shared over at Biz-Story.com. These stories can be inspiring for an up-and-coming entreprenuer. One thing about the small business/entreprenuer community is they know all too well that its better to learn from others mistakes, but that you can also learn from their successes to. Biz-story is a well designed and insightful site worth the look for any webmaster, marketer, or business owner.

Going to a summer BBQ and need a delectable recipe? (I personally hate going to backyard parties and seeing that everyone brought the same recipe from Martha Stewart Living that month). Well TemptingBites is a cooking blog that can remedify boring parties. If you love to cook or host, a subscription to their RSS feed will be well worth it. The editor adds new recipes frequently so you’ll never be without fresh ideas.

Slight-of-hand tricks are pretty sneaky. Especially card tricks. Henry teaches us most of the secrets of card tricks at Card Trick Planet. I read through a few of them and think I’ll have to try.

Speaking of card tricks, it seems the government just slipped one to poker players everywhere. A letter from the Poker Players’ Alliance was sent out that explains the legislature and a proposed activist campaign to confront it. Poker players, git yer pickets. We got some rallying to do! (Technically, I’m not a poker player especially compared to my friends. I do play Black Jack religiously and this bill affects Black Jack players too).

The last link comes from my own archives. My wife and I celebrated our 5th anniversary this week. She attempted to get me a gift at GameCrazy, but the crazies there were elitists and didn’t treat her too well as a non-gamer.

I’m going to try something new this week and offer my “Pick of the Week”. Lots of beautiful AND informative sites to pick from, so this really is hard. It was pretty much a four way tie, but my pick is going to go to MacGhetto. They are a niche classifieds site that is really put together well and I hope they succeed in their niche.

This Weeks Links (Free Links Friday First Edition)

Kicking it off with Michael O’Connell. Pretty cool all around dude that produces web comics. He’s in major
need of a new van specially equipped for wheelchair drivers. His old van is rolling to a permanent stop, killing over like a dehydrated horse in the death valley sun. Please know this is an excellent cause, giving him the independence and mobility he needs to work for a living and pick up chicks. I urge all readers (that includes you Dad) to gather together at least $1.25 (extra 25 cents should cover the paypal fees so he gets the whole dollar) and donate to his van fund. Check your paypal accounts. Do you have $1.25? What other big plans do you have for that dollar? For those unaware, I lost a cousin and close friend due to MD. Its a horrible disease that eats at the muscles, but not heart and soul, of strong men and women.

Next up is the Earners Forum just launched by Lee Dodd. This new forum is for those who have websites and somehow someway want to monetize them. If you already earn money online and want to maximize it, or if you want to learn how to get started, this Forum is your starting gate. Join Earners Forum to get the most of your website. Oh, BTW, did I mention there is a $20,000 contest going on?! Great way to start a forum Lee!

Read any good books lately? Books good enough to share? If so, you may want to take a look at BookCrossing.com. Think of it as the WheresGeorge for books. Read a book, tag it, give it to someone, tell them to do the same, track it. Really interesting to see what happens to a book.

Anthony points us towards his site SEO Buzz. It’s a blog/forum/wiki/website related to buzz. I mean SEO. Hmm…I see some long term value in an SEO wiki.

Insurance blues? I’ve had them, and I’m sure a lot of people have. Rex gave us the url to his site where you can get a Free Prescription Card. It should help prevent sticker shock when you pay for your meds.

Got a couple of uploading sites to dispense on you. The first is Speed Uploads Host your images of that embarrassing moment of your coworker at your office party for free, anonymously. Then pass the URL to everyone in the office and say “I dunno who hosted it, someone else sent it to me.” Also good for Auctions, MySpace, classified ads, etc.

The second image hosting site to share is SparkLoad. It has a pretty cool history feature that displays the URLs of the last three photos you uploaded for easy cut and paste plastering in your buddies MySpace comments.

UPDATE:

Muhammad, the site owner, just emailed me to inform me SparkLoad is not just for images. You can host regular files as well. Pretty cool!

Mike taps into the romance Americans have with long drives by sending in his link for his Road Trip Forums. After having a poke around, it looks like the perfect place to plan a trip or share that Elizabethtown story with the rest of the world. Too bad he can’t guarantee movie rights or a book deal of your adventures, yet.

Everyone knows I love a good gaming site, so I was quite pleased to see Atomm send in his link for Gamers Radio. It hosts several team servers and a radio station dedicated to gamers. The tracks are metal to help get you in fragging mode.

At the last minute Jim gets his link in for Gamer Score Chart! This very cool app pulls your gamercard from Xbox Live central and charts your progressive gamer score. Are you a flatliner or a climber? GamerScoreChart doesn’t lie!

Living in Vegas I’m quite familiar poker stories. Poker stories are a lot like fish stories, with tales of the big one (pot) that got away. PokerStories.info has some of the best stories, written by a collective group of Tuesday Night Poker players.

A friend of mine is making waves with avenuA, his band from California. I’ve mentioned them before. They’re at a tipping point and we’ll soon see some big things from them. (bonus link: listen to their current works on their MySpace page. Streaming player is built right in). You can probably tell by both links that Chad is also a web designer.

Another friend sent his link in for SickNwrong, a collection of videos and campus stile humor. He noted that its PG-13. Hey, anyone who has the numa numa video on their site is cool with me

As you know, I’m currently involved in a SEO contest. So I submitted my own link. You can see it if you click here. I think I’m in dead last, oh well. It was a very valuable learning experience

There’s a new affiliate program in town. If you sell items you want to hook up with these guys because they have ZERO startup cost and a large publisher network. If you are a publisher you want to hook up with them because they will give you real links to use and not that javascript junk that some other affiliate networks demand you use.
